My main task was to oversee the migration of 26 departmental and faculty sites away from a legacy content management system into a new custom one built with WordPress by lead developer Danny Brown.

After aiding in the testing of server security and stability we began the task of migration with a completion date goal of December 2009, but with the aid of hard working team members, we successfully completed the project in September, allowing me to join the other developers in setting up CMS site for those still using older Dreamweaver templates.

During the course of the migration into Carleton CMS, I also managed the majority of the WordPress software installations, upgrades as well as plugin upgrades and testing. While working with the lead developer and other team members, we added several new features to the CMS in an effort increase the functionality and provide the content editors and other staff and faculty with more powerful tools in a simplistic setup.

View Migration List

NORDEP

Web Portfolio

The Canada-Russia Northern Development Partnership Program (NORDEP) is a 4 year program funded by the Canadian International Development Agency with counterpart funding from the Russian partners and managed by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. To accommodate this, a series of English templates were created to match the previous look and feel of the site and to also fix the previously broken functionality, while using the various features of WordPress as a CMS. A Spoonful of Sugar is owned and operated by icing wizard Andrea Flight and is based from her home in Nova Scotia.

Built upon WordPress, the primary focus of the site is to showcase the companies creative baking abilities and variety of ideas presented in a delectable format. The homepage uses a jQuery slideshow to present visitors with beautiful, high quality imagery of custom cakes upon entering the site, and has been setup to allow for easy navigation throughout the various informational and gallery pages.

The three main areas of baking services offered showcases an image gallery that is powered by a combination of the NextGen Gallery plugin and the Thickbox jQuery add-on.

To increase functionality, expanding menus were included to allow easy sub-dividing of content pages. The availability calendar allows visitors or potential clients to have a quick overview of dates that have yet to be booked, which is powered by the Events Calendar plugin.

Site visitors can also fill out a short form to request a quote for their desired baked good, or can ask general questions by filling out the contact form. Both form areas are powered by the cformsII plugin.

Visit the Website

Students for Development

Web Portfolio

The Students for Development program supports senior-level university students (third and fourth-year undergraduates through to PhD students) to participate in internships for a minimum of three months in partner developing countries. The SFD blog provides a venue for international development interns to share ideas, opinions, thoughts, images and videos of the successes and challenges of their work and stay abroad.

The idea behind a blog to showcase the activities and travel experiences of the students who participate in the Students for Development program was quickly conceived, and had to be complete in an extremely short time frame. In order to meet the tight deadline, a free WordPress theme was selected and modified to fit the blog needs, and created in both English and French.

Starting with one blogger per language, a variety of experiences from the participants travels were shared with friends, family and others who were interested in the program. Over time, both blogs expanded to include numerous bloggers, stationed all around the world. Each blog has gone through various changes since its original inception to accommodate more bloggers and to allow the content to be easier to browse.

Visit the Website

University Affairs Magazine

Web Portfolio

University Affairs is a magazine for and about Canada’s university community, printed 10 times a year and updated regularly online. Published continuously since 1959, we offer news, commentary, in-depth articles on a wide range of topics, and career advice for academics.

The previous iteration of the University Affairs website had become increasingly difficult to navigate, read as well as edit content. With the need to create a stronger online presence, and to make news items available in a more timely fashion, the University Affairs site, and the desire to strengthen the magazines brand, the process of redesigning the site using a content management system was conceived.

Working alongside design firm Ecentricarts, a series of templates were created that suited the needs of the staff at University Affairs.
